How do I even think about crypto in a wealth plan?

Crypto is optional. Core wealth habits aren’t. Here’s a calm way to keep them in separate lanes.
Thinking about crypto in a wealth plan means deciding (calmly) whether any digital assets belong in your money picture at all, and if they do, treating them as an optional speculative slice, not as the engine that builds long-term stability.
You can build serious wealth and never touch crypto. Plenty of people do. Skipping it isn’t falling behind.
Put the jobs in order
1. Live and buffer first Housing, food, getting around, fun. Keep an emergency buffer you can reach without selling something that just halved. Friday with mates stays in the budget. You’re meant to live.
2. Core long-game growth on purpose Choose a planned investing slice of your pay (pay future-you first), and point it at diversified, long-horizon investing (and the super you’re already building). That’s the habit that usually compounds quietly over years. See What even is investing? and How do I even start investing with a small amount?.
3. Crypto only if it still fits after that, and only as optional Cryptocurrency (including Bitcoin) can swing wildly. It can go toward zero. If you include any, size it so a bad outcome hurts pride, not rent. Speculative ≠ core.
Risk, said plainly
- High volatility is normal in this space
- No guaranteed upside
- Not a company share; not a substitute for diversified markets
- FOMO and group-chat tips are terrible portfolio managers
If you can’t explain why it’s in your plan without “everyone’s talking about it,” that’s a useful stop sign.
Intentional budget, still living
Any speculative crypto money comes from an intentional line in your plan, never “whatever’s left after the weekend,” and never the buffer. Same rule as the rest of investing: decide the slice first, then live inside the rest.
A plan that only punishes today dies fast. A plan that gambles the future on one wild asset isn’t stability either. Both living and growing can fit in the same fortnight with crypto as a maybe-tiny side note, or as a clean no.
Core first. Optional later. Clear risk. Your plan.
