What even is compound growth?

What is compound growth? Money earning a bit more on top of itself over years. Plain Aussie guide: time in the game, intentional habit, still living. No maths lecture.
Compound growth is when your money grows, and then that extra can grow too.
Say you put some money aside and leave it for years. It earns a bit. Next stretch of time, you can earn on the original and on the bit it already made, so the pile can get bigger faster than if you only ever earned on the first amount. That’s it. No magic. Just growth stacking on growth.
Picture a snowball. You start with a small one. It rolls. A bit of snow sticks. Next time around, there’s more snow to pick up, so it gets chunkier without you having to throw a bigger ball each year. Same idea with money you can leave alone. Time does a lot of the picking-up.
Why people care
Because “I’ll start later” is how later never arrives.
A bit put aside this year can still be working in ten. The extra it makes can start working too. You don’t need a huge first amount. You need time in the game and money you won’t need for Friday with mates.
That’s why Super already uses this idea in the background. A long clock. Quiet. Not a get-rich-this-month story.
Pick a slice on purpose
Compounding only works on money that actually stays. If the “investing” pot is whatever’s left on Sunday night, it often gets nothing.
Pick a slice you can leave for years, after rent, food, getting around, and a life. Small and regular beats waiting for a mythical perfect lump. If this week is tight, pause. Fit your situation.
This is a habit, not a personality test.
What it isn’t
- Not a promise. Markets go up and down. Past growth is not a forecast.
- Not a maths lecture. You don’t need a formula to get the idea.
- Not “skip living.” A plan that only punishes today dies fast.
- Not the same as a savings jar for next summer. That’s a different job.
The deeper charts and the “start early vs later” pictures live on Compound growth: why time beats timing. This page is just the idea.
How it actually helps
Give later-you time. The extra needs years to become extra-on-extra. Starting when you can usually beats guessing the perfect week.
Keep it intentional. A named slice (even a small one) beats leftover vibes.
Still live. Future you and this-weekend you can share the fortnight. Habit > hype.
