Shares vs crypto vs property (light)

Three distinct paths, equal weight. No winner podium. Just trade-offs.
Three paths people talk about a lot. None is “the only smart one.” The useful move is spotting trade-offs: entry cost, how wild the ride can be, how fast you can get out, and how much admin you want.
For a lot of first-job money, shares and ETFs are the main act because you can start smaller and spread risk. Crypto turns the speculation dial up. Property is a big, slow, expensive machine: valid later, often out of reach early. That’s normal.
Calm compare, not a buy list. Fit your budget and time frame.
| Shares / ETFs | Crypto | Property | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Tiny slices of listed companies, or a bundle (ETF/index) that holds lots of them. | Digital tokens that trade around the clock. Prices can jump or crash fast. | A place you buy (or a slice of one). Deposit, loan, rates, upkeep. |
| Typical entry | A brokerage account. Can start with smaller regular amounts. | An exchange or app. Can start small. Fees and scams still matter. | Usually a large deposit, stamp duty, lending. Out of reach for many early on. |
| Upside / downside vibe | Markets bounce. A long time frame and diversification can make dips less personal. Balances can still fall a lot. | Speculation dial up. You can lose a large chunk (or all) of what you put in. FOMO is a poor plan. | Can grow over decades. Also interest rates, repairs, vacancy, and being locked in. Not the only wealth path. |
| Liquidity | Usually sell on a trading day. Not instant cash for Friday with mates. | Often quick to sell. Prices can gap while you tap. | Slow and expensive to sell. Not an emergency fund. |
| Effort | Pick a broad approach, read the PDS/fees, then mostly wait. Still homework, not a set-and-forget myth. | Research plus scam-awareness. Easy to over-check. ASIC/MoneySmart over hype. | Loans, insurance, maintenance, time. A second job, not a side quest. |
Renting + investing elsewhere is valid. Buying is valid. Waiting until the budget actually fits is valid. Trade-offs, not morality.
