What even is take-home pay?

The money that actually lands after tax (and any study-loan bits), not the job-ad number. So your week plan uses a real figure.
Take-home pay is the money that actually lands in your bank after tax (and any study-loan bits) come out. Not the job-ad number.
A job ad might say $60,000. That can sound like “about a thousand a week.” Then the first payslip arrives and the number that hits the account is smaller. That’s not a trick. That’s gross (the headline) vs net (what landed).
Job-ad number vs what landed
The ad is usually a yearly gross figure, before tax. Your week or fortnight plan should start from net: what you can actually spend, save, or point at later.
If you budget the ad number, Housing and food look easy on paper, and the week runs short. Start with what landed.
Gross vs net
- Gross: the job-ad / contract figure, before the cut.
- Tax withheld. The estimate your employer sends to the ATO as you go. That’s What even is PAYG?.
- HELP/HECS, if you have a study loan and you’re over the ATO threshold, extra can come out too.
- Net / take-home. What hits the bank. This is the number for your week.
Super is usually on top of your wage, into a fund, not a slice of take-home. Different pile.
What’s out
Tax is the main cut. Medicare levy sits in the tax story. A study loan can add extra withholding once your repayment income is over the ATO line for that year. Rates and thresholds move. ato.gov.au wins if a number goes stale.
Other bits can show up on a payslip (salary sacrifice, extra Super, a novated lease). If a line is confusing, payroll or the ATO, not a late-night guess.
Why it matters
Your week plan (Housing, getting around, food, fun, and a bit for later) only works if it uses what landed. That’s how What even is a budget? starts too.
Know the net. Then you can point a slice at Savings, Investing, or Emergency on purpose, not leftover vibes.
Reality check
First pay can feel smaller than the ad. That’s normal. You’re not “bad with money.” The cut is how Australia funds shared stuff. The useful move is naming the real number, then giving it jobs.
More on the cut itself: What even is tax?. Then How do I even split my first pay?.
