What even is overtime / penalty rates?

Extra hours or awkward shifts. Why some pay lines are higher than your normal rate.
Overtime is extra pay for working beyond your ordinary hours. Often at a higher rate (time-and-a-half, double time, depending on your award or agreement).
Penalty rates are higher rates for working at less popular times (nights, weekends, public holidays) even if you’re still inside a normal roster. You’re getting paid more because the hours are harder on life.
Same family of idea: some hours cost the employer more, so your pay line goes up. Exact rules live in your award, enterprise agreement, or contract, not in a vibes-based group chat.
How it shows up
On a payslip you might see separate lines: ordinary hours, overtime, Saturday loading, public holiday, and so on. Add them up (minus tax and other drips) and you get closer to take-home for that period. Hunt those lines: How do I even read my first payslip?.
A big overtime week can make the fortnight feel rich. Tax withholding may also jump because PAYG estimates rise with higher pay. Plan living costs on a normal week, not your best week. Then overtime becomes a bonus for buffers or an intentional save/invest slice, not something you’ve already spent in your head. Live-on number: What even is take-home pay?.
Tax angle (light)
Overtime and penalties are still income. They get taxed through PAYG like the rest of your wage. A monster month can push you into withholding more. Tax time still reconciles the year. Not a punishment for hustling; just the drip matching the dollars. The drip: What even is PAYG?.
