What even is tax?

A payslip cut landing in named pots. Tax so you know what can work.

The cut on the payslip, so you know what landed and can feed Savings, Investing, and Emergency.

Tax is how Australia pays for shared stuff: hospitals, roads, schools, the admin that keeps a country running. On a first job it shows up as a cut on the payslip. That’s normal. The useful bit: knowing net (what landed) so your week plan can feed Savings, Investing, and Emergency on purpose, not on leftover vibes.

You don’t need to become an accountant this month. You do want a TFN in, the threshold claimed once, and a folder. What even is a TFN? is the short map. ato.gov.au wins if a number on this page goes stale.

The payslip version

Your employer withholds an estimate as you go (What even is PAYG?). At year-end, a return sorts whether that was close. How to do your first tax return. Gross is before tax. Tax withheld is the cut. Net is what you actually budget.

Numbers people ask about (ATO tables. They move)

  • Tax-free threshold for Australian residents, the first $18,200 of taxable income is usually nil income tax (2026–27 tables). Claim it on the TFN declaration with one main job. Two jobs both claiming it is how people get a bill that raids the Emergency pot. The chill version: What even is the tax-free threshold?.
  • No TFN, if you don’t give a tax file number, resident withholding is generally 47%. That’s a form, not a personality test. Apply for a TFN via the ATO so more of the pay can work. The chill version: What even is a TFN?. If the first pay looked wild: Why did my first pay get taxed so much?.
  • Medicare levy: generally 2% of taxable income on top of those income-tax rates, with low-income exemptions the ATO describes. The plain map: What even is Medicare levy?.
  • HELP/HECS. Extra withholding can start once your repayment income is over the ATO threshold for that year. For 2026–27 that threshold is $69,528. From 2025–26 it’s a slice of income above that line (not a cut of your whole pay). The ATO table also has a 10% cap of repayment income at the top band. Tick the loan box on the TFN declaration so payroll withholds extra; otherwise it can land as a bill. The chill version: What even is HECS-HELP?.

If this page and ato.gov.au disagree, the ATO wins.

A folder is enough infrastructure

One album on the phone for receipts and year-end summaries. Photos count. Future-you at tax time (and the Investing line) will be glad the admin wasn’t a scavenger hunt.

TFN in. Threshold once. Know the net. Point what’s left at the wealth pots.
