How do I even get a tax refund?

Money back after you lodge, when withholding was higher than the final bill, not a prize.
A tax refund is money that comes back to you after you lodge your tax return, because more tax was taken out of your pay during the year than you ended up owing. It is not a prize, a bonus, or free money from the government.
Picture a café that takes a deposit bigger than the bill. When you pay, they hand the extra back. A refund is that hand-back. If the deposit was too small, you pay the gap instead. Both are normal.
Withholding versus the final tax
Through the year your employer sends an estimate to the ATO from each pay. That’s withholding. What even is PAYG?. Your tax return adds up the real year: income, the tax already taken, and any deductions that actually fit.
- Too much withheld → you usually get a refund.
- Too little withheld → you may have a bill.
- About right → the return can be boring. Boring is a win.
A big refund often means your take-home was tighter all year. Some people like that lump sum. Some would rather the money landed each fortnight. Neither makes you better with money. Fit it to your rent and your life. The number you actually live on: What even is take-home pay?.
A rough checklist
- TFN. The free number on your job forms. Without it, withholding can be harsh. What even is a TFN?.
- Income statements. Your employer reports what you earned and what tax was taken. They usually show in myGov once the year is pre-filled. Check them against your last payslip.
- Other income: bank interest, a side gig, a second job. If it was income, it belongs on the return.
- Deductions, only if you have them. Work costs the ATO actually allows. Don’t invent a claim because a mate did. If nothing fits, lodge without one.
The myGov path, high level
Most people lodge by linking myGov to the ATO, opening the return, checking the pre-fill, adding anything missing, and submitting. If a refund is due, you nominate a bank account and it lands there after the ATO processes it. The first-time walk-through, still high level: How to do your first tax return.
You can also use a registered tax agent if you want a human. This page isn’t a product tour and it isn’t a filing service. ato.gov.au is the source of truth when a screen or a rule has moved.
Keep it human
A refund is a tidy-up, not a personality test. Live the year on take-home, keep an intentional slice pointed at later, and lodge when you’re ready. If you owe a bit because of two jobs or a side gig, that’s maths you can plan for. How do I even handle tax with two jobs?.
Simple idea: lodge, compare tax already taken with tax actually owed, and get the difference back if you prepaid too much.
