How do I even read my first payslip?

First payslip landed. Here’s what the lines actually mean in about two minutes.
Reading your first payslip means spotting a few key lines: what you earned before tax (gross), what was taken out (tax and maybe a study loan), what went to super, and what actually landed in your bank (take-home).
That’s it. You’re not decoding a spy novel. You’re finding the numbers that run your week. If the tax line ate almost half the pay, that’s usually a missing TFN or the tax-free threshold box. Why did my first pay get taxed so much?.
The complicated vibe (skip it)
Seventeen codes. Mystery abbreviations. Googling at midnight convinced you’re being scammed.
Usually you’re not. Payslips just speak payroll.
The easy map
Gross pay (the big “before slices” number for this pay period) hours × rate, or your salary chunk. Close to the energy of the job-ad figure, not what hits your account.
Tax / PAYG. Money your employer already sent (or will send) to the tax office as you earn. It’s an estimate. Tax time sorts the final score. Refund or a bit more to pay. Both normal. The drip: What even is PAYG?.
Study loan (HELP / HECS-style), if you’ve flagged one, you might see an extra bit withheld once you’re earning enough. It’s tied to take-home. The salary headline isn’t what you live on. More in What even is HECS-HELP?.
Super (superannuation). Often shown as what your employer contributes for you (super guarantee). That’s usually on top of your wage, not a cut of take-home, but it still isn’t cash for Friday night. It’s long-game money in your super fund.
Net / take-home. What’s left for you this pay. This is the star. Rent, food, fun, buffer, investing slice. All from here. More on that idea in What even is take-home pay?.
Wording varies by employer. Hunt those ideas even if the labels differ.
Why bother learning this
Plan with gross and you’ll feel broke for no reason. Plan with take-home and the fortnight gets calmer: living now, plus an intentional slice for later if that’s in your plan.
Keep payslips (or the digital version). They’re handy at tax time and if anything looks off.
Two-minute check
- Find gross.
- Spot tax (and study loan if it’s there).
- Notice super.
- Circle take-home. That’s your real pay for budgeting and building wealth.
First payslip decoded. Go live your life with eyes open on the number that actually landed.
