What even is an ABN?

A simple invoice with an Australian Business Number badge for your own work, not a reason to quit a job.

The business number for contracting and side hustles, not a reason to quit your job.

An ABN (Australian Business Number) is a free number the government gives you when you are running your own work (like contracting or a side hustle) instead of only being an employee on someone else’s payroll. You put it on invoices so the people paying you can see you’re set up as a business.

It’s an ID for the work, a bit like a name tag for “I invoice clients.” It is not a personality upgrade, and it is not a signal that you should quit your job.

When you might need one, and when a job is enough

A normal job already has a system. Your employer withholds tax, pays super, and gives you a payslip. You use a TFN for that, not an ABN. The job number: What even is a TFN?.

  • Employee. You work for their business, on their payroll. An ABN usually isn’t part of that.
  • Contractor or side hustle. You invoice people for your own work, more than once, and they aren’t your employer. An ABN is often how that gets set up.
  • Selling old stuff once. Clearing out a wardrobe usually isn’t a business. Regular paid work for clients often is.

If you’re unsure whether a side gig counts as a business, the ATO has a short test. Use that, not a mate’s “just get an ABN, it’s a hack.” You can have a job and an ABN. Plenty of people do both.

Tax, at beginner level

On a job, tax comes out before the money hits your bank. On an invoice, it often doesn’t. Nobody is withholding for you. So set aside an intentional slice of that income for tax as you earn it: a planned pot, not whatever survives the month. Otherwise tax time can feel like a jump scare.

That income still belongs on your tax return. The tidy-up path is the same idea as a job: lodge, and the year gets squared. How to do your first tax return.

GST, one paragraph

GST is a tax some businesses add to their prices and pass on. There is a turnover threshold where registration can kick in. For most businesses that line has sat at $75,000 a year. Check ato.gov.au, because if this page and the ATO disagree, the ATO wins. Under that line, plenty of side gigs never register. Don’t build a GST spreadsheet on day one.

Keep it human

An ABN is a tool for work you run yourself. It doesn’t mean you stop living, and it doesn’t mean the weekday job was a mistake. Keep the job’s take-home planned, keep a slice of hustle income for tax, and still have Friday with mates. If the setup gets weird (employees of your own, GST, big invoices) that’s when a registered agent earns their fee. The ATO is the source of truth until then.

Simple idea: free business number for your own paid work. A payroll job usually doesn’t need one. Tax still happens. GST waits until the turnover line says so.
