What even is the HECS repayment threshold?

A payslip with a line marked where study-loan repayments can start: above an income threshold, not like a card.

Compulsory HELP repayments start above an ATO income line on the slice above it, not like a card.

The HECS repayment threshold is the income level where compulsory repayments on a HELP study loan can start. Under that line, you generally don’t have a compulsory repayment through the tax system for that year. Over it, a repayment gets calculated.

HECS and HELP are the usual names for that study-loan family. It is not a credit card. Nobody is charging card interest because you haven’t “kept up” with HECS. How the balance goes up each June, by inflation or wage growth, whichever is lower, is a different page: What even is indexation (on HECS)?. The wider map: What even is HECS-HELP?.

Repayments are on the slice above, not your whole pay

At a high level, once your repayment income is over the threshold, the compulsory repayment is worked out on the income above that line, not as a cut of every dollar you earned. Repayment income is the ATO’s measure for this. It can be a bit more than the taxable income you see on a return.

The ATO table also has a top band that caps how much of that income can be collected as a compulsory repayment. The bands and the cap move. This page won’t pretend one percentage is forever. Check ato.gov.au. If this page and the ATO disagree, the ATO wins.

The threshold moves every year

For 2026–27 the threshold is $69,528. It goes up every year, so check the ATO table when you need the exact number.

Payroll doesn’t guess your whole year on day one. You tick the study-loan box on the TFN declaration so they can withhold an estimate. The real repayment is sorted when you lodge. The tick: How do I even tell work I have HECS?. What lands in the bank: What even is take-home pay?.

Different from credit-card debt

A card wants a minimum through the month and charges a high rate if the balance hangs around. HELP repayments are tied to income and collected with tax. Paying extra off a study loan is a choice some people make later. It is not a panic-pay assignment, and it is not the same job as clearing a card.

Don’t empty Emergency, or skip an intentional Investing slice you can actually afford, just to hurry a study loan this year. A card balance that’s charging interest is usually the louder bill. Card payoff, if that’s you: How do I even pay off a credit card?. Whether to throw extra at HECS on top of the automatic repayments: Should I pay off HECS early?. Naming debt without the spiral: Owing money isn’t a vibe fail.

Still live

A threshold is a rule, not a verdict on your uni years. Know the line exists, check the ATO when the year changes, and keep a week you can live. If the withholding looks wild, talk to payroll or a registered tax agent, not a group chat.
