What even is inflation?

Prices rising over time. Cash that sits still can buy less later. Emergency and investing do different jobs.
Inflation is prices going up over time. The same dollars buy a bit less later (groceries, rent, a train fare) even if nothing dramatic happened in your week.
You might see a headline about the CPI, which is just a basket of prices the statisticians track. You don’t need the macro lecture. You need the practical bit: different money pots have different jobs.
Why cash sitting still can buy less later
A savings balance can look the same on the app while what it purchases gets smaller. Interest on a savings account can offset some of that. It doesn’t always keep up. That’s useful to know. It is not a reason to panic-move the money that pays rent.
Why an emergency fund and savings sit in their own lane
Emergency cash needs to be there when the phone dies. Named savings (a holiday, rego) need to be there on a date you can see. Those pots care more about access than about beating rising prices. A boring park is the point.
The surprise pot: What even is an emergency fund?. A common place to hold it: What even is a high-interest savings account?. Known bills, separately: What even is a sinking fund?.
Why investing sits in a different lane
Investing is for money you won’t need soon, put to work on purpose so it has a chance to grow over years including a chance to keep up with prices that rise. The balance can fall. That’s the trade-off, not a shortcut, and not a reason to invest the bill money.
Your investing slice is chosen on payday, as a planned amount, then you still live. Saving versus that long job: Investing vs saving. What’s the difference?. The one-line version of the long job: What even is investing?.
Both can be true in the same fortnight
You can hold a buffer and invest a planned slice. Inflation doesn’t mean cash is useless, and it doesn’t mean every dollar must be in the market. It means you match the job to the pot. Live this week. Give the future a job. What even is a budget?.
