How do I even consolidate my Super?

A few Super jars from old jobs, with a pause before they become one. Insurance and fees first.

Old job accounts into one, later. Insurance and fees first. No rush, no vibe switch.

Consolidating your Super means moving the balances from more than one super account into a single fund, so you aren’t carrying a separate pot from every job you’ve had. You can do it later. You don’t have to do it this week.

Two accounts from two jobs is common. It’s a paper trail, not a mess. The short version of why people wait: Consolidating later (when it might make sense).

Why people combine Super accounts

  • One login instead of a forgotten fund from a casual job.
  • One set of fees instead of several accounts each taking a bite.
  • One pile you can actually see, which makes the yearly glance easier.

Insurance and fees can change when you move

The old fund might hold death or TPD cover that ends if you close it. Some exits have costs. The fund you keep might charge different fees, and its insurance might not match what you had. Read those before you tap a button. Cover, in plain words: What even is insurance inside Super?.

A yearly fee glance is enough for most people starting out. You don’t need to compare forty funds this afternoon. The calm lenses: How do I even pick a Super fund without spiralling?.

A calm order, not a rush

  • Find the accounts. In myGov, go to ATO, then Super, to see every account in your name, including lost or ATO-held Super. Past casual jobs love opening accounts you forgot.
  • Glance at fees and insurance on each one before you close anything.
  • Decide which fund you’re keeping because the fees, cover, and admin fit you, not because a mate said it was sick on the weekend.
  • Use the ATO’s super comparison tools, or the fund’s own combine process. At a high level they move the balance across. You don’t need a custom strategy deck.
  • After it lands, check the balance arrived and whether the cover still looks right.

If this page and ato.gov.au disagree on the steps or the rules, the ATO wins. First, make sure Super is even arriving from your current job: How do I even check my Super is landing?.

Not a switch-on-vibes pitch

Combining because a reel named a fund is how people drop cover they wanted. Sit with it. One account is tidier. Tidier can wait until you’ve looked at insurance and fees. Then go back to living: Super is a long pile, not a second job.
