Learn · Super

Super isn’t a grey-hair thing. It’s a pile with your name on it.

A named Super pile invested while you work: wealth on a long clock, not a retiree club.

Super is investing with your name on it. Paid while you work. Check it actually lands.

Super is a pile with your name on it, invested on a long clock while you do the job. Not a grey-hair club. For a lot of first jobs, this is the first wealth machine you get. Often before you “feel like an investor.”

You don’t have to become a Super nerd this month. You do want it to arrive, stay in your name, and keep working in the background while Housing, Wheels, and Everyday spends run the week.

What Super is

It’s money your employer is generally required to pay on top of your wage into a fund. Super guarantee (SG). The percentage and the rules sit with the ATO and your award or agreement. They change. That’s why we don’t tattoo a rate on this page.

It’s still your money, invested for much-later-you (with rare early-release rules that are ATO territory). Same idea as the Investing line in your week plan: longer lock, automatic feed.

First job, first look

  • Have a squiz on a payslip or the fund app: is SG landing?
  • Know the name of the fund and that they have your email/mobile.
  • If nothing’s showing up after you’ve been paid a bit, ask payroll. That’s admin, not you being “bad with money.”

A past casual job might already have opened a fund. Two small piles from two jobs is common. You can tidy that later: insurance can hitch a ride, so don’t panic-merge on a mate’s tip. Confirm the machine is on. Then let it compound while you build Emergency and Investing outside Super too.

Confirm the pile exists and is being fed. That’s you investing (on a long clock), before you pick a single share.

Next, the quiet checklist

SG, the fund login, a glance at fees. First-job Super without the fog.
