How do I even salary sacrifice into Super?

Optional extra Super from your pay, before it hits the bank. Only if the week can spare it.
Salary sacrifice into Super means you ask your employer to send some of your pay straight into your Super fund before it hits your bank account. That slice usually gets taxed at a lower rate inside Super than it would as take-home pay, so more of that dollar can stay invested for later-you.
It’s optional. Your boss already pays the Super Guarantee (currently 12% on top of your wage). Salary sacrifice is extra on purpose, not a test of whether you’re “good with money.”
Why people look at it
Super is one of the main ways Australians build wealth over time: money goes in, gets invested, and has years to grow. Salary sacrifice can speed that engine up a little, if your week can spare it.
It is not an emergency fund. Once it’s in Super, you generally can’t pull it out for rent, a busted phone, or Friday with mates. Buffer first: What even is an emergency fund?.
When it can fit (and when “not yet” is fine)
Might fit if:
- Pay is fairly steady
- Rent, food, transport, and the debts you’ve chosen to prioritise are covered
- You’ve got leftover that keeps vanishing, and you’d rather point some of it at long-term wealth on purpose
“Not yet” can fit if:
- Leftover is thin and you still want room for fun and social plans
- High-interest debt is the louder fire
- Hours bounce around and next month’s pay is a guess
Both are valid. Your plan, your season.
Calm first steps
- Rough the number. Pick a small weekly or fortnightly amount you’d barely notice. Then live with the idea for a bit before you sign anything.
- Ask payroll. Not every workplace has set this up before. A short email is enough: you want to salary sacrifice $X per pay into Super.
- Check the caps (lightly). Extra Super of this type shares an annual limit with your employer’s 12% and any other “before-tax” Super. The ATO publishes the current cap. Peek once; no need to memorise it.
- Keep a cash buffer outside Super. Building for later works better when now-you isn’t stranded.
One gotcha in plain words
Salary sacrifice usually doesn’t shrink compulsory HECS/HELP repayments the way people hope. Don’t do it only to outsmart that system. The map: What even is HECS-HELP?. A different extra, from after-tax money the government may add to, is the Super co-contribution.
The DoshHero bit
If you go ahead, update your Super balance in DoshHero now and then so net worth shows the fuller picture. Then close the tab and get back to your life. What even is net worth?
Later-you gets a stronger pile. Now-you still gets to live.
