What even is the Super guarantee?

A payslip with a Super line beside take-home: employer Super guarantee, not optional pocket money.

The percentage of ordinary time earnings your employer pays into your Super. Not optional.

The Super guarantee is money your employer has to pay into your superannuation fund. It is a percentage of your ordinary time earnings (the regular pay the rules count), not a bonus your boss might add if they feel generous.

Super is a pile with your name on it, invested while you work. The guarantee is how a lot of that pile starts, often before you think of yourself as an investor. The longer map: Super isn’t a grey-hair thing.

The Super guarantee rate can change

From 1 July 2025 the rate most employees see cited is 12% of ordinary time earnings. That percentage has stepped up over several years, and it can change again. Check the current figure with the ATO or Fair Work before you memorise it.

Who is covered, and what counts as ordinary time earnings, also lives in those rules. Overtime and some allowances are not always in the base. Your award can add detail. If this page and ato.gov.au disagree, the ATO wins.

How to spot the Super guarantee on a payslip

Look for a line that says super, SG, or superannuation. It often sits apart from the cash that lands in your bank. That cash is take-home. The super line is not spending money for this week. Reading the slip: How do I even read my first payslip?. What landed: What even is take-home pay?.

A line on the slip is a promise on paper. Your Super fund's app or website is where you check it actually arrived. The 10-minute version: How do I even check my Super is actually being paid?.

It is not a nice-to-have

For a normal employee job, the Super guarantee isn’t a perk you opt into on day one, and it isn’t optional when the month is tight for the business. If the line is missing on pay that should include it, that’s a payroll conversation, not a personal failing.

Salary sacrifice is a different, optional extra from your own pay. Don’t mix it up with the guarantee your employer already owes. How do I even salary sacrifice into Super?. An after-tax top-up the government may add to is the Super co-contribution.

It sits beside the rest of your plan

You don’t choose the guarantee instead of living. It happens while you work. Emergency cash, named savings, and investing outside Super are separate decisions you make on purpose from take-home. The buffer: What even is an emergency fund?.
